Sexplicit

Sexplicit is queer-focused, pop-up strip club. We provide an alternative space to traditional strip clubs. With Sexplicit, we aim to show that businesses can be viable and successful as well as promoting more ethical practices within the stripping industry. Our events have lap dancing galore, stunning stage shows to enjoy and informational industry talks. We started in Sheffield, now we also have events in Edinburgh and Manchester. Expect more locations to pop up!

About Our First Sexplicit: May 2024, Sheffield

Our first ever Sexplicit was truly magical. We achieved everything that we set out to do. We have proven that strip clubs can provide more ethical working conditions, compensate workers correctly and still turn a profit.

So many thank yous to give. Firstly, a huge thank you to all of our incredible dancers: Autumn Flame, Holli Baby, Latisha, Katie Veil, Xra, Yorkshire Stripper, Tallulah Bankheart, Cindy, Eccy, Harley Quartz, Jesse Blue. You made our first one so special.

Thank you to our sponsors for helping us achieve our goals and showering our dancers with gifts: Anya Clara Writer; Daisy Cutter; Stocksbridge Aromatherapy and Jesse’s artwork.

A massive thank you to our venue and staff at Corporation. The amount of whorephobia and rejection we’ve received on this journey is immeasurable- to have a venue who shared our vision and passion was a refreshing comfort.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who work tirelessly in the background to make this event work: Brandon, Charles, Rosie, Jess, Antonia, Hela, Ellie, Lily, Arti, Meg and Kate

All the thank yous to Off The Ground for providing us with the x-stage and for hosting our workshops. And the biggest thank you to everyone who turned out, showed up and absolutely made the event as gorgeous as it was. Thank you for making this dream a reality!

Despite being a thriving city, there are no longer any legal strip clubs in Sheffield. Spearmint Rhino was Gemma's first ever strip club she worked at, but it closed during the pandemic. This has meant that many strippers in Sheffield have been forced out of work, made to travel further afield or have been funnelled deeper into sex work and have no choice but to operate underground in more dangerous conditions. One of our goals was to give Sheffield-based workers the choice to work locally and in a safe space in this pop-up environment.

It was also an invitation to Sheffield locals to enjoy the environment and services that are no longer legally available in the area. We know many Sheff people would like to support sex worker spaces, but can't travel further afield. We know much of the queer community does not feel safe or welcome in traditional club spaces, so we wanted to provide a space for our LGBTQIA+ siblings as well.

We successfully hired 12 dancers; half from Sheffield, half from different backgrounds. We especially sought out to hold space for strippers and sex workers from marginalised backgrounds who have their own set of societal and industry challenges. We paid all of our dancers a base wage to be there and all made extra money on lap dancing and tips. The support was so overwhelming that we guaranteed our dancers the lowest commission rate at 25%. We set a precedent with a sensible ratio of dancers to customers, selling out of 80 tickets

The whole event was simply immaculate start to finish. The gay panic was palpable. Our audience was 90% femme and absolutely everyone brought the vibes. It’s so rare to find people who truly understand what it’s like to be a sex worker, but everyone in our space stands with us. The kind of support was truly unreal. When we asked people to show up, they really did.

How Our Events Work

  • All the allies in the house say heyyy hoooo(e)!

Customers can buy tickets prior to an event. The cost of the ticket includes entry and a lap dance. This is to ensure everyone attending is paying for the main service we provide.

You can get settled into our space, have a drink (or many)! Enjoy the stage shows from our dancers. Why not show extra love and make it rain on the strippers with our tipping dollars? When you're piping hot and ready to go, you can be whisked away by a stripper for steamy lap dances.

If you're not interested in lap dances/paying for a lap dance, this event may not be for you and you can attend our more stage-based events . If you don't want dances, but just want to come to support the event, you are more than welcome to give away your lap dance chip to a dancer as a tip instead.

While we encourage you to buy more lappies, you just using your chip is absolutely enough and we want you in our space no matter your budget.

We provide a guide and etiquette handbook to customers prior to our events so you can understand how to best respect the workers in our space and you know what’s going on!

  • Full information is provided to our prospective workers before application. Details may change from event to event. Our general ethics are as follows:

    • We pay all our strippers at least a minimum working wage to attend. No risk, all reward.

    • We book a sensible ratio of dancers to customers- we do not want to overbook, so we award dancer spots as tickets sell.

    • We will be taking a commission, however, the majority of money from lap dances sold goes to the workers.

    • Dancers can choose to perform a stage set for tipping dollars. We encourage weird, wonderful and political performances! Unlike lap dances, the profits from tipping dollars are split among dancers equally, with one share going to PDSM. We do a co-op split on tipping dollars as we feel this is fairer and easier.

While Sexplicit has a model of operation and is not a co-op, we are dedicated to working with strippers in our spaces to deliver the type of event you want to work at. Gemma has designed this as her 'dream event' she'd want to work at (while having some compromise when it comes to offsetting the costs of an irregular pop-up night), but this may not be what everyone wants. We are open to suggestions of things dancers would like to see. We're too often told what to do and have to put up with so much shit, PDSM wants to break away from the bullshit and provide an environment that strippers are comfortable and happy working in. We want to be innovative, evolving and breaking barriers- dancer's input is essential to fulfil this commitment.

  • We aim to provide opportunities to a wide variety of workers already within the sex industry.

Our main goal is to provide a space for the local strippers. But you can apply from anywhere! Note that we cover base wages, but this doesn't include travel or accommodation etc. We want our events to be profitable for those working it and would hate to have anyone out of pocket! Another reason why we would prefer locals, as having workers pay to be in our space defeats the purpose.

Our main focus is on strippers who work in clubs, as we are subjected to a traditional, unethical working environment. We want to give dancers a chance to work differently and under fairer conditions. However, you are welcome to apply if you perform lap dancing or other related sexual services outside of the club environment.

Even though we aim to provide a different club model which club workers deserve, we also recognise that traditional strip clubs are not the most inclusive or intersectional of environments and can be a block for a variety of workers! It's a privilege to be able to work or camouflage in a traditional club space. This means that these venues aren't always suitable for: non-femme presenting workers; trans workers; BIPOC workers; full service workers; neurodivergent folks; plus-sized folks and disabled folks. This is why we would like to open our applications to: all genders; all types of sex workers; making space for marginalised folks like BIPOC; neurodivergent peeps; all bodies of every shape and size and favour those with disabilities.

We will not be accepting applications from non-SWers in order to provide the spaces to those who need it the most.

Our main focus is hiring current dancers who use stripping as their main or sole income. However, retired or part-time workers are welcome.

We prioritise hiring strippers from working class backgrounds/ who are on the poverty line. Other class backgrounds are welcome.

  • We regularly post our castings in this section here, on our social media and through our mailing list.

Please be patient when waiting for applicant information.
